I grew up in a small town in the hill country of Sri Lanka, surrounded by lush green mountains and beautiful waterfalls. From a young age, I loved drawing and would spend hours sketching in my notebooks, inspired by the natural beauty around me.
Every time I find myself immersed in art when I get a chance to do it, and it felt like going back to my childhood. Sitting there with a paintbrush in hand, I was reminded of the joy of my very first drawing when I was a kid.
I’ve also been into doodling since I was young and still practice it to get better. As I got older, my passion for art grew, and I started dreaming of turning my creative skills into a career.
Before completing my degree, I began my journey as a UI/UX designer, working for various companies and building my skills and portfolio along the way. My love for art continued to inspire me, shaping my design choices and leading to interfaces that are both beautiful and practical.
I graduated with a Bachelor in Information Technology from the University of Colombo, and by that time, I was already working as a UX designer with around two years of experience. I’m truly happy about my decision to pursue a part-time degree while working in the IT field, as it armed me with valuable industry experience rather than leaving me as a fresh graduate with zero experience.
Today, I’m proud to be a professional UI/UX developer living and working in Melbourne, Australia. What brings me even more joy is mentoring and guiding young professionals in this industry, watching them grow their skills and achieve their dream jobs. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege to create innovative, elegant, and functional designs for web, software, and mobile products across various industries, from tiny startups to multinational corporations.
I currently work at La Trobe University in Bundoora, which constantly reminds me of how lucky I am to be in a place with countless things I enjoy. The scenic campus is surrounded by beautiful walking trails that I’ve yet to fully explore. Walking down to the Agora to grab lunch and having it on a bench while staring at the lovely park full of birds, then heading back to my desk for UX work, is the best break a designer could ever have.
The next best thing about being part of La Trobe is the web and digital team, who genuinely enjoy their work and celebrate every achievement like a family. Having a supportive team and leading managers who appreciate what you bring to the table is a rare luck and a dream for all UX designers.
An opportunity that came up as a woman in tech, TedXWomen speaker Veronica Mudra recruited me as their permanent freelancing UI/UX Designer. I was privileged to design an app that helps domestically abused women and children to seek help discreetly.
